Panama Canal halts lock work as ship backlog grows

THE Panama Canal Authority has been forced to abandon critical maintenance work on two of its locks to clear a massive 110-ship backlog waiting to transit the crucial trade artery during its seasonal peak.

Ships are now waiting as long as eight days to transit the canal after traffic began to gradually build up from mid-February.
