Myanmar to build new port for China’s Belt and Road Initiative
As part of the China-Myanmar Economic Corridor, China seeks to build a port in Kyaukpyu in western Myanmar and connect it by highway and railways to Kunming in southern China
Kyaukpyu’s location close to major shipping lanes would enable China not only to avoid the Strait of Malacca but also to gain a foothold on the edge of the Indian Ocean, which is a region of increasing strategic competition
