Australia’s prime minister John Howard was initially told by his government’s lawyers that if he turned away Norwegian-flagged Wallenius Wilhelmsen containership Tampa in 2001, with 433 asylum-seekers on board, it could be a breach of international law, according to a report in The Australian newspaper. The move was later credited as a key factor in his victory in the 2001 federal election.
