Calls to protect waters around Mauritius from shipping

The public and non-governmental organisations are calling on the Mauritian authorities to protect the island’s waters from shipping after the Wakashio grounding incident spilled thousands of tonnes of fuel oil into the Indian Ocean in what has been described as the region’s worst ecological disaster

Following the Wakashio grounding, the public and some non-governmental organisations are asking that ships not planning to call at Mauritius ports keep further away from the coast than the 12 nautical miles stipulated by the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. Some are also calling for sections to be declared ‘Particularly Sensitive Sea Areas’
